Community Asset Mapping

The layers under Services and Amenities and Population Characteristics allow you to see where community services and facilities are located in relation to different population characteristics from the 2001 Census.

Community services and amenities are shown as points on the map. Each point has a street address. Different symbols are used to represent different types of services or amenities.

Layers under Population Characteristics are displayed by dissemination area (DA). There are over 300 DAs in Burnaby. DA data are displayed by colour ranges on the map. The value of the ranges can be seen by clicking the Legend button in the lower left side of the screen.

It is recommended that first time visitors read the Getting Started, System Requirements and Map Toolbar help pages before using BurnabyMap.

Here are the steps for using the Community Asset Mapping System:

To zoom in on an area, click on the magnifying tool, in the tool bar and either click a point on the map, or draw a "Zoom-in box" around the area you want to magnify. Once you have zoomed in close enough, the names of community services will appear.

To find out contact and program information for a particular service, click on the identify tool, in the tool bar and then click on the service on the map you want to see. A Search Details box will appear on the left of the screen. Click on the hyperlink next to the word Organization to view more information about the particular service.

More About the Community Asset Mapping (CAM) System

The CAM system has been developed to improve our understanding of the social characteristics of the city. BurnabyMap allows you to overlay community service data with demographic information from the 2001 Census. The interactive format allows you to choose layers based on your particular needs or interests. By overlaying different sets of data, you can see areas of the city that are well served versus those with gaps in service.

Population information listed under Population Characteristics is displayed by dissemination area (DA).

The DAs have been used as building blocks to create 20 distinct geographic regions in the city. These regions are called CAM Districts. The boundaries and numbers of the CAM Districts can be seen by clicking the checkbox next to Community Asset Mapping Boundaries under Services & Amenities.

To view a Census Profile for a CAM District, take the following steps:
